Types of Data
Qualitative data has no numbers.
Quantitative data is anything dealing with numbers.
Discrete data comes in whole numbers.
Continuos data is what you measure.
Discrete Data can be grouped like this:
Height in cm
1 - 10
11 - 20
21 - 30
31 - 40
41 - 50
51 - 60
Continuos data is grouped so every measurement is included.
There is a variety of signs used in continuos data.
There is the more than and equal to sign, the more than sign, then less then and equal to sign and the less than sign.

There is the more than and equal to sign, the more than sign, then less then and equal to sign and the less than sign.
The sign above is the less than and equal to sign. The sign shouldn't have a line at the bottom, the line should be just in front of the bottom line of the crocodile teeth.
The sign above is the less than sign.
The sign above is the more than and equal to sign. The line shouldn't be at the bottom, it should be just in front of the bottom line of the crocodile teeth.
The sign above is the more than sign.
Continuos data can be grouped like this:
Height (h) in cm
0 then the less than and equal to sign h then the less than sign 10
10 then the less than and equal to sign h then the less than sign 20
Mode, Median, Range and Mean
Range = The difference between the smallest and largest number.
Median=The middle number from smallest to largest after you have cancelled down. If there is two numbers in the middle after cancelling down then you add them together and divide by 2. Also you can count how many numbers there are, divide by 2. If it is a decimal number then you round it up but if not you keep the whole number the same.Once you have done this and say your number is 2. You would count till the second number and that is the median.
Mode = The most common number. If there isn't any numbers that appear more than once the mode would be no mode. Say the number 2 appeared three times and so did the number 4. Then they would BOTH be the mode.
Mean= Add up all the numbers and divide by how many
numbers there are.
How to remember Mode and Median
Mode = Mode and most both begin with 'MO'. This is
a good way of remembering them.
Median = Median and middle sound the
same. They both have 'M ' and 'D'. This is how you can remember
them.
Question 1
Here is you set of data. Now find the mode, median, range and mean.
82, 82, 73, 74, 79
Range = 9 because 82 - 73 = 9.
Median = 79 because when the numbers are in order they are : 73, 74, 79, 82, 82. Once you crossed the first
number, then the last, then the second and finally the fourth you are left with 79. This is the middle number. It is easier to cancel down with less data.
Mode = 82 because it comes up twice and all the other numbers come up once.
Mean = 78 because when the numbers are added together they equal : 82 + 82 + 73 + 74 + 79 = 390. There are 5 numbers
so 390 divided by 5 equals 78.
