Fractions
The top number is called the numerator. The bottom number is called the denominator.The numerator is how many pieces. The denominator is what size pieces.
How to add fractions:
1. 1/6 + 1/6 = 2/6
You get the denominators the same when your adding fractions. Times then by each other.You then add the numerators together.
2. 2/3 + 1/5 = 13/15
3 and 5 are in the same times table as 15. You have to get them both to 15. You times 3 by 5 and 5 by 3. Because you times 3 by 5 you times 2 by 5 to get 10. Because you times 5 by 3 you times 1 by 3 to get 3. Your new sum is 10/15 + 3/15 = 13/15
Now do the questions below (try 3 and 4) :
1. 1/2 + 1/4
2. 2/3 + 1/5
3. 3/8 - 1/8 (you need to have the denominator the same)
4. 2/4 - 1/4
How to times fractions by fractions:
You times the numerators together and you times the denominators together. That is you answer. 1/4 x 1/4 = 1/16. 1 x 1 = 1. 4 x 4 = 16. You answer is 1/16.
Now try these:
1. 2/3 x 1/3
2. 2/5 x 3/7
3. 4/5 x 8/9
4. 1/8 x 5/1
Fractions, Decimals + Percentages
To get a fraction to a decimal you need to divide numerator by the denominator.
EG1) 2/5 = ?
You do the bus stop method. This is where you draw a line. You then draw another line from the top of the first line to the right. Inside the bus stop you put the number you want to divide (numerator). Outside the bus stop you put the number you are dividing by (denominator). The sum is 2 divided by 5.
5 goes into 2 '0' times. You put the 0 on top of the 2 (on top of the bus stop). You then put a decimal point next to the 2 and the 0. You put a 0 next to the decimal inside the bus stop and carry the 2. 5 goes into 20 4 times so 2/5 as a decimal is 0.4. 2/5 = 0.4
Have a go at these:
1. 1/4 =
2. 3/10 =
3. 1/3 =
4. 2/3 =
5. 13 / 20
Fraction to a percentage:
EG1) 3/5 = %
First, you need to put the denominator over 100. You need to times the 5 by 20. Whatever you do to the bottom you need to do to the top!
3 x 20 = 60
5 x 20 = 100
You now have 60/100. This is 60%.
3/5 = 60%
Now try these:
1. 13/20 = %
2. 3/4 = %
3. 3/10 = %
Decimal to a Fraction:
EG1) 0.4 = /
First, You need to find out what are the numbers worth. So, 0 = units and the 4 = tenths. It is over tenths so it is 4 tenths. So the fraction is 4/10.
0.4 = 4/10
EG2) 0.065 = /
0 = units (u)
0 = tenths (t)
6 = hundredths (h)
5 = thousandths (th)
It is over thousandths so you know the denominator is 1000. The numerator is 65. The fraction is 65/1000 but you simplify it to 13/200.
Now try these:
1. 0.3
2. 0.75
3. 0.25
Now try this:
There will either be a fraction, decimal or a percentage and you need to find out what the other two are. Fill in the blanks!
