The purpose of a pie chart is to show and get data in an easy way. The pie chart below is an example of what a pie chart is and how it should been shown.
If you had a pie chart showing people's favourite ice cream flavour and the results were:
Cookie dough = 60 degrees
Vanilla = 70 degrees
Strawberry = 90 degrees
Mint = 110 degrees
Chocolate = 30 degrees
If the question was ' If 22 people chose mint, how many people are in the survery?'.
You would work it out by:
110 diveded by 22 = 5 degrees per person.
70 diveded by 5 = 14 people
60 diveded by 5 = 12 people
30 diveded 5 = 6 people
90 diveded by 5 = 18 people
You would get the 110 from the '110 degrees'. You would divide it by 22 as that is how many people chose it. You would then divide every other degree by 5 as '110 divided by 22 = 5'. You would then add 14 + 18 + 12 + 6 + 22 = 72. The total number of people in this survery is 72.
Drawing a pie chart
To draw a pie chart you draw a circle then draw a line down the middle. Using a protractor you measure out the angles. You then have a perfect pie chart.

If the angles are missing you work it out by doing the no. of people lived (3rd colum) multiplied by 8. You get 8 from adding 16 + 14 + 6 + 9 which equals 45. You then do 360 ' (as that is how many degrees in a pie chart)' divided by 45 which equals 8. Whatever your answer is that is what the angle is.
